Memory Foam Mattress Vs. Coil Spring Mattress; What’s The Difference?

Coil springs, as found in most mattresses, are great for many things, but your bed is not one of them! Sleeping on a pile of metal springs is probably more like sleeping on a bed of rusty nails. But what was good enough for your grandparents is now old hat. Today, we have a choice.

Take a couple of minutes to learn about the antique technology that you share about one third of your life with.

The coil spring mattress was patented in 1865 and over the next 140 odd years there have been few changes, yet over the same time we have invented cars, computers and even gone to the moon, surely bed technology is due for an overhaul?

Is there something better?

Yes, there is!

I am going to introduce memory foam mattresses and some of the differences and reasons why they are better and more comfortable than sleeping on top of bits of sharp metal covered in fabric.

1) Total Body Support

This is a concept that is new to beds. A coil spring mattress forces your body to adjust to the springs. It is pushing against you all the time and as you move it even pushes you around the bed.
You are pushing the springs down to get comfortable and they push just as hard back – no wonder many people wake up with aching muscles and stiffness.

With a memory foam mattress, things are different and better.

The foam material moulds itself to your body, because your body exerts its force onto it yet your mattress does not push back, it gently accommodates you and your weight.

As you lay down, you can feel the memory foam accomodating to you, allowing you to feel totally relaxed.

Because the memory foam mattress moulds itself to you, there is no effect from any other person in the bed – no more rolling together (Unless you want to!)

No matter how many springs an ordinary bed has it can not support your weight evenly.

2) Temperature Sensitivity

Memory foam has a neat trick up its sleeve, it responds to different temperatures by softenng to a different degree accordng to the temperature of the body lying on it, the higher the tempaerature, the softer the foam becomes. So the bed always feels cozy and warm according to the temperatures of d

ifferent parts of your body and how much pressure they apply to the bed. Your body weighs the most and is the warmest part of you and the mattress makes itself softest for your body, your arms and legs are lighter and cooler, so the foam is a little more firm – this is very comfortable, not so much lying on the bed as floating on it!

Coiled spring mattresses can not do this, anyone sick with fever will feel much more comfortable on a memory foam bed. No more clammy nights in the summer for healthy folks.

3) Length of Life

A normal coil spring mattress has a life of about 5 years, but many people keep them much, much longer, robbing themselves of sleep and rest every night. A memory foam mattress should last at least ten years and some manfacturers offer guarantees of up to twenty years, each of those nights will be comfortable and restful.

A Personal Review Of The Tempur Pedic Mattress

My wife and I bought a Tempur Pedic mattress back in the early days when most people hadn’t heard of memory foam mattresses. We’ve slept on it for some years now and, I feel, I can hive an honest opinion of the Tempur Pedic mattress and or memory foam mattresses in general.

We live in an old period house and for many years we slept in an antique French Empire bed. Because antique beds were never made to standard measurements, we had to have the mattress specially made to fit the bed. The mattress was made from inner-springs and horsehair, I believe. The mattress has lasted many years, and is still going strong. To cut a long story short, we redecorated another bedroom, and we did it in the modern style. It is now our new bedroom; guests now sleep in our old bed.

For the new ‘modern-look’ bedroom we bought a low, Japanese style bed. When looking for a new mattress for the bed, our supplier recommended the Tempur-Pedic mattress. Neither my wife and I had heard of it nor of the ‘amazing’ new visco-elastic material it was made from. Not adverse to trying something new, we both went to a large department store, which was one of the few places back then that stocked the Tempur mattress; unlike now, where every bedding store sells memory foam mattresses from Tempur Pedic and other.

If you’ve never lain on a memory foam mattress, I can only say it feels like no other mattress you’ve slept on before. I can still remember how firm it felt when we initially laid down on it, only to feel it give way and mould itself around us; like a big, soft, lazy sigh. A Tempur Pedic memory foam mattress doesn’t have the springiness of traditional mattresses. But that doesn’t mean to say it doesn’t support you either, on the contrary, my wife and I both find the Tempur mattress to be extremely supportive.

Anyhow, despite it’s initial strange feel, we decided to buy it. We were also influenced by the advice we were given by the sales person. We were told how the Tempur Pedic mattress gave unparalleled support because it moulded to your exact body shape; helping to avoid pressure points. The rep also went on to explain how memory foam was the best sleeping solution for sufferers of back pain. I had suffered from back pain before – nothing too serious –

but the idea of a mattress that offered relief from backache sounded very appealing.

Finally, the day came when the mattress arrived. The first thing that struck me about the Tempur Pedic mattress was how heavy it was – about the same weight as our horse hair and spring mattress. I couldn’t understand why the mattress was so heavy, as it was just a lump of foam with no springs or anything!

Sleeping on the Tempur mattress felt a little strange at first; the lack of springiness and that feeling of gradually sinking into the memory foam. But it didn’t take all that long to get used to it and we’ve now been sleeping on the Tempur mattress for 6 years. And now that I’ve got the Tempur Pedic mattress, I can honestly say I would never have anything else but a memory foam mattress – quite possibly another Tempur Pedic. When we do sleep on a conventional mattress in a hotel or relatives house, we both notice how the more traditional mattresses don’t give the support that memory foam does – we’re memory foam snobs.

The biggest plus point about memory foam for me – and my wife – is that there is no mattress movement when one of us moves. I toss and turn a lot during sleep, which used to disturb my wife’ sleep; when I turned, a wave motion went through the mattress and my wife suffered the consequences. Now with our Tempur Pedic memory foam mattress there is no movement of the mattress when I toss and turn during the night. And incidentally, I believe my backache has been greatly improved since sleeping on a visco-elastic memory foam mattress.

I’ve heard and read about some of the negative comments some people have made about Tempur Pedic, or memory foam mattresses in general.

The first negative point many seem to raise is the smell of the mattress when they first take delivery. It’s true the mattress does have a slightly ‘chemically’ smell to it when it first arrives. But after a few weeks, the smell goes away. I can honestly say that the Tempur Pedic mattress we bought was less smelly than the old spring and horsehair mattress we had – and that was a very good quality, expensive mattress from a well-known manufacturer.

Also, some have claimed that the Tempur Pedic mattress looses its shape after some time – dips appear, thus loosing any support you are supposed to get. Well, again, all I can say, is that we’ve had our Tempur Pedic mattress for some years, have never turned it and it is still as flat as the first day we got it. Perhaps, if the couple, or person sleeping on it, are of a heavy build this might happen. I weight between 190 to 200 pounds – my wife is lighter.

All in all, my wife and I love our Tempur Pedic mattress and would highly recommend Tempur Pedic, or another brand of memory foam mattress – though of course, we’re biased and believe Tempur Pedic is the best memory foam mattress you can buy.

Despite the recent increase in popularity of air, latex, gel and memory foam, the innerspring mattress remains the number one choice for most and the Serta Perfect Sleeper is one of the market’s best sellers. But, is it the best mattress of its type, or would you best be advised to look elsewhere?

Serta remains one of the giants of the industry. The company describes its sleep products as being America’s Favorite Mattress. While this may not be entirely true, there’s no doubting that each year the company manufacturers and sells more mattresses than just about everyone else. However, high sales don’t necessarily mean high quality. Other manufacturers like, Jamison, King Koil, Kingsdown the massive Sealy Company will tell you that their products are the best. So, what to believe?

First, let’s take a look at what you get when you buy a Serta Perfect Sleeper mattress. Coil count is an important consideration in an innerspring mattress. Most of the company’s mattresses come with 532 coils in queen size. This may sound like a high count but other, cheaper brands like King Koil come with around the same number of coils (King Koil also has 532 coils in queen size – the more expensive Kingsdown mattress comes with an impressive 832 coils).

But it’s in not that simple. In addition, you need to pay attention to coil configuration; its gauge, number of turns and how the coils are placed in the frame. The Perfect Sleeper does well in this department. The coils are made of high-tempered steel with high gauges and sufficient turns to ensure that the mattress will give many years of service. The coils are also zoned; there are five zones that give extra support where it’s needed and more give elsewhere.

After the coils you need to compare top and bottom upholstery as wells as the quilting. The bottom layer is composed of a fire-retardant blend of natural and synthetic materials. The top layers are dependent on the type of mattress. The Firm comes with 1″ of high-density foam and 1″ of comfort foam. (Plush comes with 2″ of comfort foam, the Pillow with a further layer of 1 3/8″ zoned convoluted foam, with the Euro-Top coming with a top layer of memory foam).

The mattress quilt is called Advanced Comfort Quilt by Serta. Basically, it consists of rolling peaks of convoluted foam and fluffy fibers. While the quilting is good, I believe the quilting found in other manufacturers, like Stearns & Foster and Kingsdown to be superior, though you will pay extra for these brands.

The Serta Perfect Sleeper is definitely one of the best mattresses on the market (if you prefer innerspring). There are many configurations available, the main being Firm, Plush, Pillowtop and Euro-Top. Unfortunately, these come in a confusing array of names like Sandpiper, Nightstar Wendover Ashwood, Misty Midnight – the list goes on and on. By keeping in mind the more salient points like coils, foundation layers and the type of mattress you can cut through the ‘confusion’ and choose the mattress that will work best for you.

Visco elastic memory foam was created by NASA in the early 1970s as an attempt to help the astronauts relieve some of the pressures that they felt during take off and reentry. After NASA perfected it with the help of a Swedish foam manufacturer it was soon used in hospitals to help long-term patients. Then in the early nineties a company called Tempur-Pedic created a mattress and began selling it worldwide. Because of the increasingly exploding popularity of these mattresses, manufactures from Canada and the United States have begun manufacturing them and selling them to the masses.

The Quality

One of the problems that people run into when they purchase Visco-elastic foam is that the foam they purchased is not as high quality as it should be. Some manufacturers will charge very high prices from foam that is of much less quality than other versions or other models. This is especially true if you purchase memory foam from your local retail store (stores such as Wal-Mart, target, and Kmart are examples). These companies tend to outsource the manufacture of their memory foam or purchase it from overseas manufacturers. Overseas manufacturers may use toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde and PBDE in the creation of their foam. So not only are these foam products toxic but they also extremely low quality. So to find a higher quality mattress you would need to look for mattresses that are made in the United States or Canada.

So when you’re looking for Visco-elastic memory foam, make sure that you check with the manufacturer to find out exactly where the foam was made.
